- 1822 - Hughes was born in Uffington on 20th October
- 1830 - begins school at Twyford, near Winchester
- 1833 - moves to Rugby School
- 1841 - goes to Oriel College at Oxford to study law
- 1845 - takes final examinations at Oxford
- 1847 - marries Fanny Ford
- 1848 - called to the Bar
- 1854 - established the Working Mens College with Charles Kingsley
- 1855 - begins work on Tom Brown's Schooldays
- 1857 - Tom Brown's Schooldays published
- 1859 - The Scouring of the White Horse published
- 1861 - Tom Brown at Oxford published
- 1865 - elected to Parliament as MP for Lambeth
- 1868 - re-elected, this time as MP for Frome, Somerset
- 1869 - appointed as a Queens Counsel
- 1882 - appointed as a County Court judge on the Chester circuit
- 1896 - Hughes dies on 22nd March, aged 73
